The 2013 Middleton Country Fair turns 22. That's twenty-two years of family fun and history in the channel. Located at the Middleton Community centre, McDowall St, Middleton, it showcases the arts, crafts, talents, animals, produce and fun of the surrounding communities.
More than 80 stalls are set up throughout the grounds featuring trade displays, antiques and collectables, linen, books, native and exotic plants, local honey, fruit, vegetables and juices, preserves, sweets, photography, and homemade and artisan arts and crafts. Plenty of foods and drinks are also be available.
Entertainment and demonstrations run during the day include live music, singing and performers, shingle splitting, sheep shearing, spinning and weaving, vintage machinery, home produce, animal and reptile displays, pony rides, a merry-go-round, kids cup cake icing, the scarecrow competition voting, a lucky gate prize and the drawing of the big raffle.
This year a special feature will be a series of presentations in the hall featuring Hedley Hoskinson, Sue Metzier, Alec Dean. Steve Cumper, Tino Carnevale of ABC TV's Gardening Australia, along with his mum Pat. Also Matthew Evans, Mary Walker and Letetia Ware will present sessions. All with time for Q & As.
A special attraction of the fair is the annual Middleton Country Fair Scarecrow Competition sponsored again this year by the Bendigo Bank at Kingston. The scarecrows can be seen all along the Channel highway north and south of Middleton: on fences, up paddocks and in trees. Visitors to the fair are invited to vote for their favourites from pictures displayed.
Middleton is located on the shores of Long Bay, 50 kilometers south of Hobart. A beautiful 45 minute drive south along the Channel Highway as it meanders among picturesque paddocks and orchards and offers spectacular views of Bruny Island and the D'Entrecasteaux Channel.
The Fair is run by a local voluntary committee with finances raised put back into community projects in the Channel area. Free parking, free bus service and toilet facilities are available.
Entrance fee is $5.00 at the gate and kids are FREE.
